The name Andalusite was given by Delamtharie after the Andalusia Province of Spain. Later it was found that the type site of the mineral is El Cardoso in Almeria Province. Many scholars have advocated a change of name, but still, the mineral is popular as Andalusite. The stone may be of varying colors ranging from pink, rose-red, brown, green and white. The purple variety of Andalusite is known as Viridine and Chiastolite is another variety which includes black inclusions of carbon. The varying colors make it popular as a precious gemstone. The price of this gemstone depends a lot on the perfect cutting edge, as only a masters craftsmen can cut the crystal in perfect angles without which the pleochroic colors of the gemstone will not be visible.
