Vastu Shastra guides several key elements of the home interior, including their proper location, contents, and direction, as follows.
Main Entrance
The main door of the house must be built from high-quality wood. It must be wider than the other doors in the house and should look more impressive than the rest. The main entrance reflects the overall atmosphere of the house and must face North-East.
Shoe Rack
Footwear and shoes must be kept in the south-western part of the verandah. They must not be placed in the bedroom.
Almirah
The almirah (cabinet) must be kept on the south-western side of the room. If you have any precious items, the ideal place to keep them is in the south-western portion of a south-western room of the house.
Bed
Beds and folding beds must be kept on the south-western side of the room — do not keep them in the corner of the room. You should sleep with your head toward the south for sound sleep and good health; this may also help with insomnia.
Couches
The sofa must be placed on the southern and western side of the living room. The head of the family should sit facing south or west.
Dining Room
The dining room must be in the eastern, southern, or western part of the house. Painting the walls orange or pink may stimulate the appetite. The dining room may be a separate room or adjacent to the kitchen, and should be located to the north-west of the kitchen.
Study Table
You may place your study room on the south-western side of the room. One should face north or east while reading. The study table should be rectangular and of medium size, kept at least three inches away from the wall.
Wardrobe
The bedroom wardrobe should sit flush along the wall. This gives you more space in the room and keeps the bedroom airy and tidy. Wardrobes must be located on the southern or western side.
Mirrors
Never keep a mirror in the study room, and do not place one directly opposite the bed in the bedroom. The only suitable place for a mirror is on the eastern or northern wall.
Paint Colour
Colour has the power to change your state of mind. Don't use grey, black, or red at the main entrance of the house. Sky blue, deep green, or white bring encouraging energy to your family.
Plants within the house
Don't keep thorny plants inside your house. Bonsai trees or red-flowering plants should not be kept in the house. The north-eastern side is not good for planting trees. Keep potted plants away from the eastern or northern walls.
Paintings and Statues
Heavy statues, images of overfed animals, and paintings with frightening or malevolent imagery must be kept away. Poorly made drawings with harsh colours bring negative energy into the house. Depictions of the Ramayana or Mahabharata should be kept out of the house, though other mythological art may be used for interior design. Don't place statues of gods in the bedroom. Vastu recommends paintings of natural scenery and temples for good health and pleasant living.
