Why south-facing homes are feared
South is ruled by Yama, the god of death and justice, which created the belief that south-facing homes are unlucky. In reality, Vaastu treats every direction as useful when used correctly.
Placing the main door
Divide the south wall into nine parts. Place the door in the fourth pada from the south-east corner (Grihakshat) or nearby favourable padas. Avoid the south-west portion for the entrance.
Layout tips
- Keep the master bedroom in the south-west.
- Place the kitchen in the south-east.
- Keep more open space and windows in the north and east.
- Build the south side slightly higher and heavier than the north.
- Locate the underground water tank in the north-east.
Remedies for south-facing homes
- A copper or brass Vaastu strip at the threshold
- A Hanuman or Lord Ganesha image above the main door
- Red or deep brown door colour
- Bright lighting at the entrance
Who benefits
South-facing homes are often good for business people, politicians, lawyers and those in public roles, especially when Mars is favourable in their horoscope.
