Vaastu Shastra

Vaastu Ideal Home

Vastu has a meaning of its own. It deals with the science of selecting a plot and preparing that plot to build a structure. A rectangular or square-shaped plot is ideal for Vastu. First, we must construct a boundary wall. That plot should then be divided into 81 squares of equal size according to a plan.

It is not essential to follow rigid plot rules. The main entrance of a house should preferably be situated on the elevated portion of the north-eastern side. It may be from the north or east of the north-east direction. Alternatively, the door can be on the south of the south-east, or the west of the north-west direction. If that is not possible, you should locate the main door in the middle of any side. There must not be any obstacle or body of water directly opposite the main door.

Balconies should be planned on the eastern and northern sides. You must avoid the south or west direction. If you do need to keep balconies on the south or west side, larger balconies should be placed on the northern and eastern sides instead. Care must be taken when providing a balcony. The ideal location for the kitchen is the south-eastern direction of the house. Alternatively, it can be on the north-western side, though the cooking area should be arranged so the cook faces east while cooking. The kitchen should not be located in the north-eastern or south-western direction, because both of these may create trouble with finances or health.

Sufficient light, water and air are needed for people to live a pleasant life. So when a house is built, we must ensure that it gets enough sunlight and air. There must be accessible groundwater in the locality of the house. Sunlight carries many types of energy, and each type of energy suits a particular task. The plot divided into 81 squares is known as "Ekasitipada Vastu". These squares indicate where to place pillars, where to locate the main gate, where to locate the kitchen and other rooms, and where to place different kinds of furniture.

The sun's energy is known as "Vastu Purusha", meaning the deity of all lands. The position of the Vastu Purusha changes day by day, and it also depends on the season.

The main bedroom must be constructed on the south-western side. A bed must not be placed beneath a beam. Rectangular and square-shaped bedrooms are suitable for ensuring peace and success. Hanging images that depict violence or sadness should be avoided.

Mirrors and televisions should be covered at night. Your head should face south during sleep.
