Earth (Prithvi) – south-west
Earth gives stability, patience and strength. The south-west should be the heaviest part of the house, with thick walls, the master bedroom, wardrobes and storage. Earthy colours such as brown, beige and yellow suit this zone.
Water (Jal) – north-east
Water brings clarity, freshness and the flow of opportunities. Underground water tanks, borewells, aquariums and water features belong in the north-east, north or east. Keep this area light and low.
Fire (Agni) – south-east
Fire represents energy, digestion, confidence and money. The kitchen, electrical panels, inverters and generators are best placed in the south-east. Red, orange and pink support the fire element.
Air (Vayu) – north-west
Air governs movement, communication and relationships. Windows, ventilation, guest rooms and the place where vehicles are parked suit the north-west. White, grey and silver work well here.
Space (Akash) – centre
Space is the element that holds all the others. The centre of the home, called the Brahmasthan, should be open, clean and free from pillars, toilets, staircases and heavy furniture.
When elements clash
Problems arise when opposing elements meet, such as a kitchen (fire) in the north-east (water) or a water tank in the south-east (fire). Such clashes are traditionally linked with stress, health issues and money troubles. Where moving a room is not possible, colours, metal strips, lighting and plants are used to restore balance.
