Transit Report (Gochor Phal)

Transit, or Gochar, is one of the most important concepts in Indian Vedic astrology. Your birth chart is fixed at the moment you are born, but the planets keep moving through the sky every day. Transit is the term used for the current, real-time position of the planets, as compared with the planets in your birth chart.

The current position of each planet is the same for everyone on Earth at any given time. However, the effect of that transit is different for each person, because it depends on where the planets were placed at the time of their own birth, especially the position of the Moon. This is why two people can experience the same planetary transit in very different ways.

How Gochar Is Read

In Vedic astrology, transits are read from your Moon sign, also called your Rashi. Your Moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon was in at the exact time of your birth. To understand how a transit will affect you, astrologers look at how many houses away the transiting planet is from your Moon sign. When a planet transits your Moon sign or a friendly house from it, the effect is usually smoother. When it transits a house that is less favourable, the effect can feel more challenging.

For example, a person born with the Moon in Sagittarius and a person born with the Moon in Capricorn will feel the same real-time position of Jupiter in different ways, because the transit falls in a different house counted from each person's Moon sign.

Jupiter, being the largest and heaviest planet, is considered the most influential planet in a person's life. Because of this, the transit of Jupiter is given great importance in Vedic astrology. The next important planet is Saturn, which stays in one zodiac sign for about two and a half years. When Saturn transits through the native's Moon sign, and the signs before and after it, the person goes through a phase known as Sade Sati, which lasts about seven and a half years in total and is one of the most talked-about transits in Vedic astrology. Mercury and the Moon move quickly through the zodiac and have a lighter, shorter-term influence compared to Jupiter and Saturn. Because their effect does not last long, their transits are usually not given the same importance, and remedies are rarely suggested for them.

Transit and the Houses of Your Chart

Once your ascendant, or Lagna, is calculated, the rest of the houses in your birth chart are marked out counter-clockwise from the ascendant sign. Each house governs a different area of life, such as career, health, family or relationships. When a planet transits through a particular house, its influence is usually felt in that area of life for as long as the transit lasts. A transit, or Gochar, report studies these real-time planetary movements against your personal birth chart and shows which areas of your life are likely to be active during the current period. Since transits keep changing while your birth chart stays fixed, checking your transit report from time to time can help you understand what phase you are going through and plan ahead.
