Meghalaya is a state located in the north-eastern region of India. It is known as the wettest region of India as it receives the highest amount of rainfall in the year. The most famous festival of this state is Shad Suk Mynsiem that is celebrated in April every year. The rituals or ceremonies of this native festival are conducted by individual family clans or the Khasi state. The folk dances are performed to signify the matrilineal and patrilineal structure of the Khasi society. The significance of these folk dances is that a man is the protector of a woman’s honor.
Another famous festival in Meghalaya is the Nongkrem festival. It is celebrated in Smit, 15 kilometers away from Shillong. The festival is celebrated for a good harvest, peace, and prosperity. People from all over the country and the world come to witness this celebration. This festival involves young women performing the Shad Kynthei and the men circling them performing the Shad. Other festivals in Meghalaya include the Behdienkhalam festival, Shad Sukra, Wangala Festival, Strawberry Festival, and other native and national festivals.
