About India’s Holidays
India has three national holidays observed in every state – Republic Day (26 January), Independence Day (15 August) and Gandhi Jayanti (2 October). All other holidays are regional: each state and union territory notifies its own list, based on the festivals, harvests and historic days important to its people. That is why a holiday such as Pongal, Bihu or Durga Puja may be a public holiday in one state and a working day in another.
Many festivals follow the Hindu lunar calendar, the Islamic calendar or regional calendars, so their Gregorian dates change every year. For auspicious timings on any day, see today’s Panchang.
