"Krittika" is a Sanskrit word meaning "the cutters". This nakshatra has a questioning, critical quality and the skill to spot the smallest cause of a fault. Any flaw that blocks the way to success falls under its sharp gaze. It is ruled by the Sun, and its deity is Agni, the god of fire. Its position in the heavens also gives its natives a power that goes beyond the physical. Krittika is a major source of solar, fiery energy. It is represented by a group of stars, the Pleiades, which Vedic astrologers saw as a necklace, so its astronomical importance is considerable. Krittika is a storehouse of latent power.

Krittika, the "cutters", is said to have a more feminine than masculine nature. Like a cutting tool, Krittika stands for both creation and destruction, as well as for emotional desire. It is the third of the twenty-seven nakshatras. Some say this star group has six stars, while some ancient Vedic texts say it has seven.

The shape of this star group resembles a blade. A verse in the nakshatra yajna of the Taittiriya Brahmana says that seven offerings are poured into Agni in the Krittika yajna, which is taken as proof that the group has seven stars. These seven are named Amba, Dula, Nitatni, Abhrayanti, Meghayanti, Varshayanti and Chupunika.

Krittika men are not known for their looks, but they are reliable and courteous. They are intelligent and give good advice. They dislike people who openly criticise their position. They build wealth so they can be independent. They keep their word, which is admirable, and they try to do something useful for society. They often prefer to work away from their birthplace, as this helps their career.
