Gandhi Jayanti is a national holiday in India on 2nd of October every year. It marks the birth anniversary of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi or Mahatma Gandhi. He was born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, Gujarat. He is known for his huge contributions towards Indias freedom struggle from the British Rule, and his philosophies towards human life. He is known as the “father of the nation” in India and has impacted the lives of every Indian.
Gandhi not only contributed to Indian freedom struggle but he also fought to bring significant changes to the Indian society. He fought against the oppressive Indian caste system and worked towards the abolition of the inhumane treatment of untouchables. He also fought to establish equality and brotherhood among a divided India. His beliefs and principles have motivated every Indian to contribute to bringing down the mighty colonial empire to its knees. His quotes inspire youth even today. His idea of non-violence has taught everyone that even in a gentle way, one can change the world.
He is an international symbol of non-violence. The United Nations General Assembly on June 15, 2007, announced October 2 as International Day of Non-Violence. The day is celebrated to “the universal relevance of the principle of non-violence” and the desire “to secure a culture of peace, tolerance, understanding and non-violence”. Gandhi also provides recognition to the indigenous handlooms and weavers in India.
On October 2, celebrations and events are held all across the country to celebrate the life of this great man. Raj Ghat in Delhi, Mani Bhavan in Mumbai and Sabarmati Ashram in Wardha are the favourite place for tourists to visit on this day. The President and Prime Minister of India also pay homage to Raj Ghat where Gandi was laid after he has assassinated.
